For many of the parents in the stands, Saturday was a day they probably never thought they would see — and one they likely never will forget. Thirty-one children ages 2-17 got to play in a softball game that wasn’t about competition. It was about participation. The pure joy of getting to hit a ball and run, wheel or even be carried around the bases could be summed up only by the range of smiles and emotions on display both on the field and in the stands.  “It was awesome,” said Jackie Parrish, the mother of a special-needs child and president of the Optimist Miracle Movers club. “It was such a wonderful day for all of the families.”  Saturday’s softball game at Hummel Park in Plainfield marked the first major event for the Miracle Movers program, sponsored by the Plainfield Optimist Club and open to any child in the region with mental, physical or developmental disabilities. Volunteers helped children who needed assistance on the field.  Every child played and received a T-shirt and trophy.  Eventually, Parrish envisions the program expanding into other youth sports, such as basketball, bowling and soccer.  The only other outing planned this year will occur July 11. A golf outing will give participants an opportunity to work on driving, chipping and putting at Deer Creek Golf Course in Clayton.  “We hope by 2011 we can start leagues that would last four weeks in a lot of different sports,” Parrish said. “The key right now is finding a place to do this. We would start sooner if we had a location.”  A Miracle Field for the program’s baseball and softball needs is being planned as part of the new Plainfield Youth Athletic Complex now under construction next to the Plainfield Correctional Facility on the west side of town.  Parrish also said the club is seeking both players and volunteers who want to make a difference in a child’s life.  For more information about the program, go to optimistmiraclemovers.com.
